High mileage cars

What’s your experience?
Highest I’ve taken a runner to is 145k and sold it for more than I bought it at 90k
Is bangernomics the future in the mad max post COVID dystopia?

I’m the total opposite Once it gets to 60k I ditch it. Can’t be bothered with the maintenance.

School of thought that a 100,000 miler is better than a 70,000 miler as the clutch/shocks can belt etc would have been changed by then.
Recently bought an E93 BMW , 49,000 miles , one owner from new.
3 weeks later the clutch went 😡

I’m looking at a vw transporter that has done only motorway miles and serviced every 10k and has 260k on the clock. Cam belt and water pump changed at 240k and a service history better than I’ve ever seen. I fancy it. The VW TDi engines are good for half a million I reckon I’d looked after.
Am I mad?

Personally no, in my industry the standard is the merc sprinter , think it’s pretty much the same van.
A lot come up for sale round about the 250/300 mark. Must be a reason for that.
If you want a good one for a bargain then splitter hire firms are going bust left right and centre and/or need cash. Ring around and see what they got , just remember to HPI it first as a lot were on finance.

No, a splitter van is (usually) used to cart smaller bands about or the headliners from the hotel to the gig , usually have two rows of facing seats , 3 either side and a PlayStation installed . The rest of the van is boarded out and that’s were the gear goes.

Mace this one is only 5 yrs old so has been on the motorway or in the workshop it’s entire life. I know it has been well looked after and looks brand new. I reckon it’s worth the risk so long as i look after it

Bought my current car, Skoda Ocatvia vrs, almost new in 2013 (it was an ex demonstrator) and have got 120,000 miles with no issues beyond fluid and brake changes. I have a decent commute. The one before that was a Saab 9000 that I bought at 102,000 miles for peanuts. Kept it for 5 years and sold it on at 145,000. Look it up occaisionally for old times sake and it is still on the road somehow. I sold because things like pipes, bushes, engine mounts, shocks etc kept giving out on a regular basis and I got bored of getting it fixed. Still the favourite car I have owned as it was bloody quick in a straight line a very comfy. Like driving a flying leather gentleman's club armchair.

Depends of type of engine, type of driver, type of mileage and service history.
I'm not interested in cars, they get me from A to B so as long as they are well built and comfortable for my needs I am not interested in spending shed loads on money on one
I bought a Toyota Yaris diesel in 2002 and did 210,000 miles in it over 8 years I had it, same clutch, same exhaust. Tyres and break pads changed. I had it serviced every 10,000 miles, most of the mileage was long trips. I bought another Toyota Yaris diesel in 2014, it was a demonstrator less than a year old with around 10,000 miles on the clock. Still got it, done over 100,000 miles same clutch same exhaust, same dpf. As before new tyres and break pads. Only thing that has gone wrong was the aircon condensor but that was changed under warranty. A lot of people don't know how to drive properly, too much riding the clutch pedal or not knowing when to change gear etc. A diesel engine worked properly should easily cover 150,000 miles without much major going wrong other than wear and tear.

I got mine remapped after the turbo went south and the garage who looked after it fitted their own trick turbo innards. It was terrifying round corners if you put your foot down but such fun in straight lines.

Bloke I knew from Bristol had a 30 year old Saab which he used to commute on weekly basis to York and back, for six months. He didn't have the slightest worry about reliability, and nor did he need to.
Impressed me.
Although I'd prefer a new one...

The engine that went into 9000 was ludicrously overengineered. Mine made 350hp and there was one nutter who put a huge turbo on one and made his own 500hp Astra Van. There was one guy in the US who topped 600,000 mile with his.
